How to tell which ones are silver
- Silver: struck in San Francisco (an S mint mark under Eisenhower's portrait) from 1971 to 1976, and sold to collectors as proofs in brown boxes or uncirculated coins in blue packs. They weigh 24.59 grams, and the edge shows no copper stripe.
- Not silver: every Eisenhower dollar made for circulation, from 1971 to 1978, is copper-nickel, with a copper stripe on the edge and a weight of 22.68 grams.
- Proof dollars without silver: San Francisco also struck copper-nickel proofs, so an S alone doesn't prove silver. The weight and the edge do.
