What is a Maple Leaf worth?
The Canadian Maple Leaf is one of the purest bullion coins made: .9999 gold or .9999 silver. Each holds exactly the metal its size states, so its value follows the gold or silver price.

What is a Maple Leaf?
The Royal Canadian Mint has struck the gold Maple Leaf since 1979 and the silver Maple Leaf since 1988. The back shows a sugar maple leaf; the front shows the reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II and, on newer coins, King Charles III. The dollar amounts are Canadian legal tender values; the metal is worth far more.
- Purity: gold Maple Leafs have been .9999 fine since late 1982 (the first ones were .999), and silver Maple Leafs are .9999. Pure gold is soft, so gold Maple Leafs scratch and dent more easily than 22-karat coins like Eagles and Krugerrands.
- Security features: newer Maple Leafs have fine radial lines in the background and a tiny laser-engraved maple leaf on the back, with the year's last two digits visible under a magnifier (on silver Maple Leafs since 2014). Older coins don't have them, so their absence alone doesn't mean a fake.
- Milk spots: white spots are common on silver Maple Leafs. They don't change the silver content, but they can affect what a collector pays for an individual coin.
Check these before you sell
