What is a Krugerrand?

The Krugerrand is South Africa's gold bullion coin, minted since 1967 and named for Paul Kruger, a 19th-century South African president, and the rand, the country's currency. It was the first modern coin made to hold exactly one ounce of gold, and it has no face value in dollars or rand: it trades on its gold.

  • 22 karat: 91.67% gold, with copper added for durability. That's why a 1 ozt Krugerrand weighs 33.93 grams but holds 31.1 grams (one troy ounce) of pure gold, and why it has a warmer, orange tone than pure gold coins.
  • Sizes: 1 ozt, and since 1980 the 1/2, 1/4, and 1/10 ozt coins, each holding the gold its size states.
  • Proofs: proof Krugerrands have mirror-like fields and frosted designs. They hold the same gold; send photos if you have them in their original cases.

Check these before you sell

Keep Krugerrands in their tubes or capsules, and count them by size. Don't clean them. Krugerrands are among the most counterfeited gold coins, so every buyer will test them; we verify every coin on arrival and pay on what we find. For other gold coins, see how to sell gold coins.
