What is a Philharmonic?
The Austrian Mint has struck the gold Philharmonic since 1989, the silver one since 2008, and a platinum one since 2016. It honors the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra: the front shows the great organ in Vienna's Golden Hall, and the back shows the orchestra's instruments.
- Purity: gold and platinum Philharmonics are .9999 fine, and silver ones .999. Pure gold is soft, so gold Philharmonics scratch more easily than 22-karat coins; keep them in capsules.
- Face value: euros since 2002, and Austrian schillings before that (2,000 schillings on the 1 ozt gold coin). Either way, the metal is worth far more than the face value.
- Other sizes: the Mint also makes a 1/25 ozt gold coin and very large 20 ozt and 1,000 ozt pieces. Tell us what you have and we'll price it on its metal.
