Guide
What is a Britannia worth?
The Britannia is the Royal Mint's bullion coin, in gold and silver. Every Britannia holds the metal its size states, including the older, less pure ones, so its value follows the gold or silver price.

What is a Britannia?
The Royal Mint has struck gold Britannias since 1987 and silver ones since 1997. The back shows Britannia, the figure who personifies Britain, with her trident and shield; the front shows the monarch, Queen Elizabeth II and, on newer coins, King Charles III.
- Older Britannias are less pure, not lighter in metal: gold Britannias were 22 karat until 2012 and silver ones were .958 fine. They weigh a little more to hold the same full ounce, and we pay on that ounce. Since 2013 both have been .9999 gold and .999 silver.
- Security features: since 2021, Britannias have fine shading lines on the Union Flag on Britannia's shield, tiny lettering around the design, a background of wave lines that seem to move as you tilt the coin, and a small symbol that changes from a trident to a padlock. Older coins don't have them.
- Milk spots: white spots are common on silver Britannias. They don't change the silver content.
Check these before you sell
Keep Britannias in their tubes, capsules, or the Mint's packaging, and count them by metal, size, and year. Don't clean them. We verify every coin on arrival and pay on what we find. For British sovereigns and other gold coins, see how to sell gold coins.
