What is an American Gold Buffalo worth?
The American Gold Buffalo is the U.S. Mint's pure gold coin. A 1 ozt Buffalo holds one troy ounce of .9999 gold, so its value follows the gold price, not the $50 stamped on it.

What a Gold Buffalo is worth today
Gold is trading at $3,942 per troy ounce (the Kitco bid). We pay 96% of that for gold bullion coins, priced when we verify your package: $3,784.70 for a 1 ozt Buffalo today.
What is an American Gold Buffalo?
The U.S. Mint has struck the Gold Buffalo since 2006. It was the Mint's first 24-karat (.9999 fine) gold coin, and its design comes from James Earle Fraser's 1913 Buffalo nickel: a Native American profile on the front and an American bison on the back.
- Size: almost all Gold Buffalos are 1 ozt. The Mint made 1/2, 1/4, and 1/10 ozt Buffalos only in 2008, in small numbers, and collectors often pay more than their gold for those; send photos if you have them.
- Proofs: proof Buffalos (mirror finish, W mint mark) hold the same gold and are priced at least on it.
- Pure gold is soft: Buffalos scratch and dent more easily than 22-karat Eagles. Keep them in capsules and don't clean them.
Buffalo silver rounds are different
Many private mints sell 1 ozt silver rounds with the Buffalo design. They aren't U.S. Mint coins and have no face value. We buy them as generic .999 silver rounds, at 90% of the silver price: $45.09 per 1 ozt round today. A Buffalo nickel, meanwhile, contains no silver.
