The name

The name Osiris written in Egyptian hieroglyphs, followed by the signs for gold and silver, in a cartouche

Osiris was one of ancient Egypt's great gods: lord of the afterlife and judge of the dead, god of rebirth and of the fertile land renewed each year by the Nile flood, and in myth the first king of Egypt.

As judge of the dead, Osiris presided over the weighing of the heart. The dead person's heart was set on one pan of a balance and the feather of Ma'at, the goddess of truth and order, on the other. A heart that balanced the feather was declared "true of voice," and its owner passed into Osiris's kingdom. A heart heavier than the feather, weighed down by wrongdoing, was eaten by Ammit, the Devourer of the Dead, and the soul was gone forever. That balance is where our motto comes from: weighed fairly, paid at published rates.

The balance of Ma'at: gold weighed against the feather of truth, and level.

Our mark spells the name of Osiris in hieroglyphs: an eye, a throne, and a seated god. It's followed by the signs for gold and silver, the bead collar nbw and the collar with a mace ḥḏ, and a plural marker. Ancient Egyptian had no single word for "precious metals," so gold and silver together stand in for it. The whole mark sits in a cartouche, the loop of rope Egyptians drew around the names of kings.

The colors are the pigments Egyptian painters used: yellow ochre for gold, gypsum white for silver, malachite green, Egyptian blue, and red ochre. Osiris is green because he was dead: Egyptians gave him the green skin of a body after death.
