What is an American Gold Eagle worth?

The American Gold Eagle is the U.S. Mint's gold bullion coin. Each one holds exactly the gold its size states, so its value follows the gold price, not the dollar amount stamped on it.

What is an American Gold Eagle?

The U.S. Mint has struck Gold Eagles since 1986. The front shows Augustus Saint-Gaudens's Liberty, from the 1907 $20 gold piece. The back showed a family of eagles until 2021, when the Mint changed it to an eagle's head.

  • 22 karat: 91.67% gold, with silver and copper for durability. A 1 ozt Gold Eagle weighs 33.93 grams and holds one full troy ounce of pure gold.
  • Face value: the $50, $25, $10, and $5 stamped on them is legal tender value only. The gold is worth far more.
  • Proof and burnished coins: the Mint also sells proof Eagles (mirror finish) and burnished ones (satin finish, with a W mint mark) to collectors. They hold the same gold and are priced at least on it; send photos if you have them in their original boxes.

Check these before you sell

Keep Gold Eagles in their tubes, capsules, or Mint boxes, and count them by size and year. Don't clean them. We verify every coin on arrival and pay on what we find. For Buffalos, Maple Leafs, and other gold coins, see how to sell gold coins.
