What is a sovereign?

The sovereign is a British gold coin first struck in its modern form in 1817, and still made by the Royal Mint today. Most show Benedetto Pistrucci's design of St George slaying the dragon on the back and the monarch of the day on the front.

  • 22 karat: 91.67% gold. A sovereign weighs 7.99 grams and holds 7.32 grams of pure gold.
  • Mints around the world: sovereigns were also struck in Australia, Canada, India, and South Africa, marked by a small letter on the back above the date (S for Sydney, M for Melbourne, P for Perth, C for Ottawa, I for Bombay, SA for Pretoria). No letter usually means London.

Keep sovereigns in their capsules and don't clean them. Sort them by monarch if you can. We verify every coin on arrival and pay on what we find. For other gold coins, see how to sell gold coins.
