What is a Mexican 50 pesos?
Mexico first struck the 50 pesos in 1921, the hundredth anniversary of the end of its war of independence, which is where the name Centenario comes from. The front shows Winged Victory, the statue atop Mexico City's Angel of Independence, with the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl behind her.
- Gold: 90% gold and 10% copper. The coin weighs 41.67 grams and holds 37.5 grams (1.2057 troy ounces) of pure gold.
- Restrikes: most 50 pesos you'll see are dated 1947 but were struck later, as official restrikes. They're genuine and hold the same gold.
- The smaller coins: the 20, 10, 5, 2½, and 2 pesos are the same 90% gold, and many are also restrikes.
