What is a Kangaroo?

  • Gold: the Perth Mint's gold bullion coin started in 1986 as the Australian Nugget, showing famous gold nuggets; a kangaroo replaced the nugget design at the end of the 1980s. Many people still call it the Nugget.
  • Silver: a 1 ozt silver Kangaroo has been made since 2016. The Perth Mint's Kookaburra and Koala silver coins are valued the same way, on their silver.
  • Legal tender: the coins carry an Australian dollar face value, far below their metal.
