A gold bar is worth its weight in pure gold at today's price. Bars are stamped with their weight and purity, usually .999 or .9999, so working out the value is simple.

What decides a gold bar's value

  • Weight and purity: both are stamped on the bar. A 1 ozt bar of .9999 gold holds one troy ounce of pure gold. Metric bars are sold in grams; a kilo bar holds 32.15 troy ounces.
  • Troy ounces, not kitchen ounces: a troy ounce is 31.1 grams, about 10% heavier than the ounce on a kitchen scale. See troy ounces, grams, and pennyweight.
  • Assay cards: many small bars come sealed in a card stating their weight, purity, and serial number. Leave them sealed; a sealed card makes the bar quicker to verify.
  • Serial numbers: note them before you ship. Your payment confirmation lists what we received.

Check these before you sell

Count your bars by size and maker, and keep any receipts or certificates with them. Gold bars are counterfeited, so every buyer tests them; we verify every bar on arrival and pay on what we find. For coins, see how to sell gold coins.
