What is a tola bar worth?

A tola is a traditional South Asian weight: 11.6638 grams, exactly 3/8 of a troy ounce. The 10 tola bar, often called a TT bar, holds about 3.75 troy ounces of gold, and its value follows the gold price.

Where tola bars come from

The tola dates to the weights of British India, where it was fixed at 180 grains, and it's still how gold is weighed and priced in India, Pakistan, Nepal, and the Gulf. Ten tola bars are made by Swiss and Dubai refiners for that market, and many come back to the United States with families who bought them there.

Before you sell

  • Read the stamp: it gives the weight in tolas or grams and the purity, usually 999 or 9999. A bar marked in grams isn't a tola bar, even at a similar size.
  • Keep the certificate: if it came sealed in a card, leave it sealed; see assay cards.
  • Jewelry is different: 22K South Asian jewelry is weighed in tolas too, but it's paid as karat gold; see 22K gold.

We pay more than pawn shops, jewelers, and mail-in gold kits: in Consumer Reports' tests, jewelers and pawn shops paid 36% to 71% of melt value, and mail-in kits 11% to about 29%. We pay 94% for scrap gold. Who pays the most?
