PAMP, Valcambi, and Perth Mint bars.

A gold bar from a well-known refiner is worth its gold: the weight and purity stamped on it, at today's price. The brand doesn't add gold, but it decides how easily the bar sells.

The names you'll see

  • PAMP Suisse: a Swiss refiner known for its Lady Fortuna design, sold in sealed CertiPAMP cards.
  • Valcambi: another Swiss refiner, maker of the CombiBar, a bar scored to snap into small pieces, such as 1 gram or 1/10 ounce.
  • Perth Mint: Australia's government-owned mint and refinery.
  • Others: Argor-Heraeus, the Royal Canadian Mint, and other refiners on the London Bullion Market Association's accredited lists.
  • Discontinued brands: Johnson Matthey left gold and silver refining in 2015, and Engelhard's bars ended after BASF bought the company in 2006. Their bars are still sound bullion and sell readily.

Why brand matters when you sell

A buyer can verify a bar from a known refiner quickly: the design, the stamped weight and purity, and often a serial number all match what the refiner makes. An unbranded or unfamiliar bar is still worth its gold, but it needs more checking. Bars still sealed in their assay cards are the easiest of all.
