How to sell silver.

Selling silver well comes down to three things: knowing what you have, knowing today's price, and getting a written offer stated as a percentage of that price. Silver is at $49.46 an ounce right now (the Kitco bid).

Know what you have

  • Sterling: flatware, tea sets, and jewelry stamped STERLING or 925, paid on their silver after melting.
  • Silver coins: pre-1965 U.S. dimes, quarters, and halves (90% silver), Morgan and Peace dollars, and bullion coins like Silver Eagles.
  • Bars and rounds: from 1 ozt to 100 ozt and kilo bars, valued on their weight.

Check for STERLING or 925 and leave silver plate out (see is silver plate worth anything?). Sort coins by date: see which coins are silver.

Know what it's worth

Dealers pay a percentage of the spot price, the market price for an ounce. We pay 95% of the silver value for BU sovereign coins, 90% for generic bars and rounds, 90% for 90% U.S. coins, and 80% for sterling. Today that comes to:

ItemWe pay today
1 ozt Silver Eagle or Maple Leaf (BU)$46.99
1 ozt generic silver round or bar$44.51
$1 face value of 90% U.S. silver coins$31.83
Sterling, per gram$1.18

Scrap prices are per gram of metal after melting, not per gram of what you send. Stones are removed, and dirt, glue, springs, and anything else that isn't gold or silver burn off or separate out, so the weight paid is usually less than your scale shows.

Get written offers

Ask each buyer what percentage you'll be paid, of which price, and when that price is set. An offer stated as a percentage of the live spot price is easy to compare; a single dollar figure for a bag of mixed items isn't. See how much buyers pay.

Ship it safely, or meet in person

Selling online works well once you have a written estimate. Ship it by mail, insured, with tracking and a signature. In the Bay Area we come to you for estates. See how to ship.

Get paid

We pay within 7 to 10 business days after delivery, by Zelle, wire, ACH, or PayPal, to an account in your name. You'll need photo ID and a signed ownership statement. See how it works.
