How to sell gold.
Selling gold well comes down to three things: knowing what you have, knowing today's price, and getting a written offer stated as a percentage of that price. Gold is at $3,942 an ounce right now (the Kitco bid).

Know what you have
- Gold jewelry and scrap: rings, chains, broken pieces, and dental gold, stamped 10K, 14K, 18K, and so on, paid on the gold they contain.
- Gold coins: bullion coins like Gold Eagles, Maple Leafs, and Krugerrands, and older U.S. gold coins, some of which are worth more to collectors.
- Gold bars: from 1 gram to 1 kilo, valued on their weight and purity.
Look for the karat stamp on jewelry (see gold stamps) and test anything unmarked. Sort coins from jewelry: coins and bars are paid at a higher rate.
Know what it's worth
Dealers pay a percentage of the spot price, the market price for an ounce. We pay 94% of the gold value for scrap and karat gold, and 96% for gold coins and bars. Today that comes to:

Scrap prices are per gram of metal after melting, not per gram of what you send. Stones are removed, and dirt, glue, springs, and anything else that isn't gold or silver burn off or separate out, so the weight paid is usually less than your scale shows.
Get written offers
Ask each buyer what percentage you'll be paid, of which price, and when that price is set. An offer stated as a percentage of the live spot price is easy to compare; a single dollar figure for a bag of mixed items isn't. See how much buyers pay.
Ship it safely, or meet in person

Get paid
