Scrap prices are per gram of metal after melting, not per gram of what you send. Stones are removed, and dirt, glue, springs, and anything else that isn't gold or silver burn off or separate out, so the weight paid is usually less than your scale shows.

A plain 14K band weighing 6 grams, for example, comes to $417.45 today.

What decides a ring's value

• The stamp: inside the band. It can wear faint on old rings; see how to read gold stamps.
• Weight: bands range from a gram or two for a thin ring to well over 10 grams for a heavy one. A kitchen scale that reads grams is close enough for an estimate.
• Stones: diamonds and gemstones aren't paid as gold. Have a jeweler remove any stone you want to keep or sell separately.
• Sizing beads and repairs: old repairs and solder can be a lower karat, which is part of why melted gold can weigh a little less. Here's why.

Rings we can't accept

We can't buy rings with personal engravings or inscriptions, such as an engraved wedding band, or class rings, which almost always carry a name or initials. Leave those out, or ask us first.
