What does 925 mean on jewelry?

925 means sterling silver: 92.5% pure silver. If a gold-colored piece is stamped 925, it's silver with a thin layer of gold, not solid gold.

Scrap prices are per gram of metal after melting, not per gram of what you send. Stones are removed, and dirt, glue, springs, and anything else that isn't gold or silver burn off or separate out, so the weight paid is usually less than your scale shows.

Our minimum for scrap sterling is 1 kilo; jewelry and flatware can be combined to reach it.

925 on gold-colored jewelry

A yellow or rose piece stamped 925 is sterling silver plated with gold, often sold as vermeil or "gold over silver". It's paid on its silver, not as gold. Real gold carries a karat or gold purity mark instead: 10K, 14K, 18K, or 417, 585, 750.

Other marks you may see with 925

  • 925 Italy, 925 Thailand, 925 Mexico: sterling made in that country.
  • STER or STERLING: the same thing, spelled out.
  • 925 with a small hallmark: often a maker's or assay office mark; see how to identify sterling.
