Guide
Is white gold worth less than yellow gold?
No. White, yellow, and rose gold of the same karat hold the same amount of gold. 14K white gold is worth exactly what 14K yellow gold is worth, gram for gram.

What white and rose gold are worth today, per gram
Gold is trading at $3,925 per troy ounce (the Kitco bid). We pay 94% of melt value, the same for every color:
| Karat | Gold | We pay per gram |
|---|---|---|
| 10K | 41.7% | $49.47/g |
| 14K | 58.3% | $69.16/g |
| 18K | 75.0% | $88.97/g |
Scrap prices are per gram of metal after melting, not per gram of what you send. Stones are removed, and dirt, glue, springs, and anything else that isn't gold or silver burn off or separate out, so the weight paid is usually less than your scale shows.
What makes gold white or rose
- White gold is gold alloyed with white metals, usually nickel or palladium, and plated with rhodium for a bright white finish. When the plating wears, a slight yellow tint shows through. The karat stamp tells you the gold content.
- Rose gold gets its color from extra copper in the alloy.
- Only the karat matters: the other metals change the color, not the amount of gold.
White gold or platinum?
The two look alike, but platinum is stamped PT, PLAT, or 950, and it's much heavier for its size. White gold carries a karat stamp: 10K, 14K, 18K, or 417, 585, 750. See how to read gold stamps and what platinum jewelry is worth.
