What is platinum jewelry worth?

Platinum is rarer than gold and much denser, and fine platinum jewelry is usually 90% to 95% pure. Its value comes from its weight, its purity, and the platinum price.

What platinum stamps mean

Under the Federal Trade Commission's jewelry rules, a piece may be called plain "Platinum" only if it's at least 950 parts per thousand pure platinum. Common marks:

  • PLAT, PT, 950PT, or PT950: 95% platinum, the most common grade in American jewelry.
  • 900PT or 850PT: 90% or 85% platinum; the number has to appear with the mark.
  • Mixed marks such as 600Pt.350Ir.: each platinum-group metal listed with its amount. Nothing under 500 parts per thousand may be called platinum at all.

Platinum or white gold?

They look alike, but white gold is stamped with a karat (14K, 18K, 585, 750) and is usually coated with rhodium for its bright finish. Platinum is noticeably heavier for its size, and it doesn't wear through to a yellow tone the way rhodium-plated white gold can.

How platinum is valued

Platinum jewelry is valued by its platinum content: weight times purity times the platinum price, less the buyer's margin. Platinum is at $1,412 an ounce right now (the Kitco bid). Settings often mix metals, such as a platinum head on a gold band, so each piece is tested before it's priced. Stones don't count toward the metal.

Check the stamps before you sell

Check every piece for a stamp, keep platinum separate from gold if you know which is which, and send photos of the marks. We'll tell you what to expect before you ship.

We pay more than pawn shops, jewelers, and mail-in gold kits: in Consumer Reports' tests, jewelers and pawn shops paid 36% to 71% of melt value, and mail-in kits 11% to about 29%. We pay 94% for scrap gold. Who pays the most?
