What 14K gold is worth today
Gold is trading at $3,925 per troy ounce (the Kitco bid). At that price we pay $69.16/g for 14K gold, which is 94% of the value of the pure gold it contains.
Scrap prices are per gram of metal after melting, not per gram of what you send. Stones are removed, and dirt, glue, springs, and anything else that isn't gold or silver burn off or separate out, so the weight paid is usually less than your scale shows.

What is 14K gold?
14K means 14 parts gold out of 24: 58.3% pure gold. Many makers alloy it at 58.5%, which is why it's often stamped 585 as well as 14K or 14KT; 14KP means "plumb", the maker's claim of the full karat.
- Color: yellow 14K has a warm, rich tone. White 14K is alloyed with nickel or palladium and usually rhodium-plated; rose 14K gets its color from extra copper.
- Durability: it balances color and hardness, which is why it's the most popular karat for jewelry in the United States.
Work out the value yourself
Gold is priced per troy ounce, and a troy ounce is 31.1035 grams. So:
- Pure gold per gram = gold price ÷ 31.1035
- 14K gold per gram = that × 0.583
- What a buyer pays = that × the buyer's percentage
For example, with gold at $4,000 an ounce, a gram of pure gold is worth $128.60, so a gram of 14K holds about $74.98 of gold. At our 94% of melt value, that's about $70.48 a gram.
Every karat, per gram today
| Karat | Gold content | We pay per gram |
|---|---|---|
| 10K | 41.7% | $49.47/g |
| 14K | 58.3% | $69.16/g |
| 18K | 75.0% | $88.97/g |
| 22K | 91.6% | $108.78/g |
| 24K | 99.9% | $118.51/g |
Weigh it in grams or pennyweight
Jewelers weigh gold in grams or pennyweight (dwt). One pennyweight is 1.555 grams, and 20 pennyweight make a troy ounce. A kitchen scale that reads in grams is close enough for an estimate; scrap is paid on its weight and purity after melting.
Why the final amount can differ
Scrap is paid on the gold that's actually there after melting. Stones, steel clasp springs, solder, and dirt all add weight without gold, and older pieces can run slightly under their stamp. Why the melt can weigh less explains each one.
What a fair offer looks like
Ask any buyer two things: what percentage of melt value they're paying, and a percentage of which gold price. A good-sounding percentage of a low or outdated price is still a low offer. Ours is the Kitco bid, which you can check yourself at kitco.com.

We pay more than pawn shops, jewelers, and mail-in gold kits: in Consumer Reports' tests, jewelers and pawn shops paid 36% to 71% of melt value, and mail-in kits 11% to about 29%. We pay 94% for scrap gold. Who pays the most?
