What is 24K gold worth?

24K gold is 99.9% pure gold. It's as pure as gold gets: too soft for most everyday jewelry, but standard for bars, some coins, and traditional Chinese jewelry.

What 24K gold is worth today

Gold is trading at $3,942 per troy ounce (the Kitco bid). At that price we pay $119.03/g for 24K gold, which is 94% of the value of the pure gold it contains.

Scrap prices are per gram of metal after melting, not per gram of what you send. Stones are removed, and dirt, glue, springs, and anything else that isn't gold or silver burn off or separate out, so the weight paid is usually less than your scale shows.

What is 24K gold?

24K is pure gold: at least 99.9% gold, stamped 24K, 999, or 9999. Nothing is added, so there's no white or rose 24K.

  • Where it's used: bullion bars and coins such as the Canadian Maple Leaf and the American Gold Buffalo, and some Chinese and Southeast Asian jewelry sold as pure gold.
  • Durability: very soft. It bends and scratches easily, which is why most jewelry is made in lower karats.

Work out the value yourself

  • Pure gold per gram = gold price ÷ 31.1035 (grams in a troy ounce)
  • 24K gold per gram = that × 0.999
  • What a buyer pays = that × the buyer's percentage

For example, with gold at $4,000 an ounce, a gram of pure gold is worth $128.60, so a gram of 24K holds about $128.47 of gold. At our 94% of melt value, that's about $120.76 a gram, and 10 grams of 24K comes to about $1,208.

Where you'll find 24K

Gold bars and rounds; coins such as Maple Leafs, Buffalos, and Philharmonics; and pure-gold (chuk kam) jewelry from China and Hong Kong. It's stamped 24K, 999, or 9999. Bars and coins are priced at our bullion rate rather than as scrap.

Check these before you sell

Check the stamp (see how to read gold stamps), weigh your pieces in grams, and ask any buyer what percentage of melt value they pay, and of which gold price. Scrap is paid on the gold actually there after melting, so stones, clasp springs, and solder don't count; here's why the melt can weigh less.
