The two designs
- Liberty Head, 1839–1908: Liberty in a coronet, with an eagle and shield on the back.
- Indian Head, 1908–1929: A Native American in a headdress, designed by Bela Lyon Pratt. The design is sunk into the coin rather than raised, which makes it easy to recognize.
Earlier designs, from before the Liberty Head, are rare.
Key dates
The 1909-O and the 1929 are the best-known rare dates, and Carson City (CC), Dahlonega (D before 1862), and Charlotte (C) coins are scarce.
Before you sell
Never clean a gold coin: cleaning leaves fine scratches that cut a collectible coin's value sharply. Keep graded coins in their holders. Counterfeits exist, some made of real gold of lower purity. We test every coin before it's priced.
