- Liberty Head, 1840–1907: Liberty in a coronet, with an eagle and shield on the back.
- Indian Head, 1908–1929: A Native American in a headdress, designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, with the design sunk into the coin.
Earlier designs, from before the Liberty Head, are rare.
Key dates
The 1911-D is the key date of the Indian Head series, and branch-mint Liberty Head coins (C, D, O, and S) are scarce.
Before you sell
Never clean a gold coin: cleaning leaves fine scratches that cut a collectible coin's value sharply. Keep graded coins in their holders. Counterfeits exist, some made of real gold of lower purity. We test every coin before it's priced.
