Silver by the gram
The metal value is the live price times the weight. We pay 90% of the silver value for generic .999 bars and rounds:
| Pure silver | Metal value | We pay today |
|---|---|---|
| 1 gram | $1.61 | $1.45 |
| 5 grams | $8.05 | $7.25 |
| 10 grams | $16.11 | $14.50 |
| 1 troy ounce (31.1 grams) | $50.10 | $45.09 |
| 100 grams | $161.07 | $144.96 |
| 1 kilo | $1,610.69 | $1,449.62 |
Prices are for pure metal. A piece that's part silver is worth its silver content: weight times purity times the price.
Sterling, per gram
Sterling is 92.5% silver. We pay 80% of the silver value for sterling flatware and jewelry: $1.19 per gram of sterling today. See scrap silver prices.
Scrap prices are per gram of metal after melting, not per gram of what you send. Stones are removed, and dirt, glue, springs, and anything else that isn't gold or silver burn off or separate out, so the weight paid is usually less than your scale shows.
Grams and troy ounces
Precious metals are priced by the troy ounce, 31.1035 grams, which is heavier than the ordinary ounce of 28.35 grams. A kitchen scale that reads grams is close enough for an estimate. See troy ounces, grams, and pennyweight.
