Is gold a good gift?

Gold makes a lasting gift: it doesn't tarnish, it keeps its value as metal, and it can be passed down. The catch is that small pieces cost noticeably more than the gold in them, so it pays to choose the right size and form.

Gold gift ideas by budget

Gold is at $3,925 an ounce right now (the Kitco bid). The gold in each of these is worth, today:

GiftGold in it today
1 gram gold bar in an assay card$126.20
1/10 ozt gold coin, such as a Gold Eagle or Maple Leaf$392.52
1/4 ozt gold coin$981.30
1 ozt gold coin or bar$3,925.20

Expect to pay more than these figures: the premium over the gold is highest on the smallest pieces. See how much gold or silver to give.

Gifts with meaning

  • A coin dated the year of a birth, wedding, or graduation. Gold Eagles have been struck every year since 1986.
  • A pre-1933 U.S. gold coin, such as a $2.50 or $5 Indian Head, for a gift with history; they cost a little more than their gold.
  • A gift card or certificate holder makes a small bar or coin easy to present.

What to know

  • Bullion over proof: proof and collector versions look beautiful but cost much more than their gold, and usually sell back for less than they cost.
  • Gift taxes: in 2026 you can give up to $19,000 to each person without filing a gift tax return. Above that, the giver files Form 709, but tax is rarely due.
  • Include the receipt: gold received as a gift keeps the giver's cost basis, which the recipient needs when they sell. See taxes on selling gold.
