Guide

How much gold or silver to give as a gift.

Start from your budget, then pick the size that gives the most metal for it. Silver suits small budgets; gold starts at about a gram. Here's what each size holds at today's prices.

1/10 ozt gold coin$393.38A birthday, graduation, or anniversary

1 ozt gold coin$3,933.80A major occasion, or a start on savings

Gold is at $3,934 and silver at $49.06 an ounce right now (the Kitco bid). Prices for the gifts themselves run higher than the metal values shown.

Why small pieces cost more per ounce

Making and packaging a 1 gram bar costs nearly as much as a 1 ozt bar, so the premium is a much larger share of a small piece's price. If the gift is meant to hold value, one larger piece usually gives more metal for the money than several small ones. If the point is the moment, a small coin from a meaningful year is perfect.

The gift tax limit

In 2026 you can give up to $19,000 to each person without filing a gift tax return; spouses giving from their own funds can each give that much, $38,000 together. Above that, the giver files Form 709, but tax is rarely due because it counts against a large lifetime exemption. Give the receipt along with the gift: the recipient takes your cost basis. See taxes on selling gold.
