What is 800 silver worth?

800 silver is 80% silver, the rest usually copper. It's common in older European silverware and jewelry, especially from Germany and Italy, and it's valued by its silver content.

Scrap prices are per gram of metal after melting, not per gram of what you send. Stones are removed, and dirt, glue, springs, and anything else that isn't gold or silver burn off or separate out, so the weight paid is usually less than your scale shows.

Where 800 silver comes from

  • Germany: a law that took effect in 1888 let silverware be stamped with its purity only if it was 800 or finer. That silverware carries a crescent moon and a crown beside the number. The crescent and crown were never used on jewelry.
  • Italy: 800 is one of Italy's two legal silver standards, with 925. Italian pieces show the purity and a maker's mark with a number and a province code.
  • Elsewhere in Europe: 800, 830, and 835 all appear on older continental silver. The number is the purity in thousandths.

800 silver isn't sterling

Sterling is 925. In the U.S., 800 silver can be sold as "800 silver", but not as sterling, coin silver, or solid silver. Don't confuse it with "German silver", which is a name for nickel silver and contains no silver at all. See how to read silver stamps.

Before you sell

Weighted candlesticks and hollow knife handles hold less silver than their weight suggests; we pay on the silver recovered after melting. Fine antique pieces can be worth more to collectors than their silver. Our minimum for scrap silver is 1 kilo. You can mix different kinds of silver in one shipment. Unsorted lots are processed together and paid at the rate for the purity of the combined lot, so mixing in lower-purity silver lowers the payout: anything under 90% silver is paid at the lower-purity silver rate (70%).
